There are so many different floor specifications how can you be sure the floor you are buying will be safe?... SlipAlert can help
Many floors are specified with German Ramp measures: R9 - R13, some (especially Italian or American floors) are specified with co-efficient of friction measures: (0.36 is good, 0.4 may be required), some are specfied in PTV (Pendulum Test Values) again 36 or 40 may be required, But all these measures come with a caution and the only sure way of knowing the floor is safe is to test it when it is laid. The most reliable, quick and easy way is to test it with SlipAlert.

If you are responsible for specifying a new floor what measures should you use?...
The level of slip resistance you require will vary according to the intended use of the floor. HSE would advise PTV of 36 or better for all floors, but 80% of floors fail to achieve this wehen wet. Many European floors will claim to be R9 or better - but R9 is the lowest measure on the German ramp test. Italian or American floors are often specified in co-efficient of friction measures where 0.36 or 0.4 is theoritically safe - but often these are measures are safe in the dry but the wet measures are misleading - see HSE website
So, the only safe way to specify floors is to specify SlipAlert Test Values and then measure the floor when it is laid. You will require STV of 130 or better in the dry and somewhere below STV 173 for wet slip risk. The more ofetn your floor is wet, the closer you will want it to score 130 or better in the wet. A floor that is never wet should still score STV 173 just in case there is a spill or water leaks on the floor.
Special flooring situations: pool surrounds, shower areas, sports halls, multi-purpose flooring, kitchens, floor areas prone to condensation etc.
